I hope you’re having a great fourth of July.  I’m down in Charlotte enjoying family time.  I don’t often read Outside magazine, but I received the June issue as a gift (Jack Johnson is on the cover).  Matt Samet (former editor of Climbing magazine) wrote a deeply personal and interesting article about his addiction to prescription medicine and his road to recovery.  It can be read online here.

For a little back story about Outside, and how this story almost didn’t get published, check here.

Thanks for posting this, because I would have missed it, Eli. I don’t read Outside…even with that hottie on the cover. (-: I wish I could say this man’s experience is a single, unique event. It’s not. While there are places in medicine for any, each of those meds, thoughtful care has to be given to their dispensing. And most should be temporary, except in special circumstances. People, and this includes doctors, simply don’t take the time to talk to people about “Why?” or “What’s going on in your life?” Believe me, it is easier to give someone a pill to numb them than sit down and commit to dialoging through an issue/conflict/experience, etc. The UK doc cited in this article was right on in her analysis of managing fear in climbing.

    Glad you liked it Nancy.
