Released on July 21, 2023, the film endeavors to envision a world ruled by Barbies. That is, one in which the power, privilege, and prestige is held predominantly by women, not men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After seeing the movie with my wife, I\u2019ve found myself wondering: What would the sport, lifestyle, industry, and general community of climbing look like in Barbieland?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are ten things I think would be dramatically different\u2014and probably better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Most of the climbing companies would have women founders.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Patagonia. The North Face. Mountain Hardwear. Outdoor Research. Black Diamond. Eddie Bauer. Arc\u2019Teryx. Marmot. Petzl. La Sportiva. Scarpa. Adidas. Metolius. What do all these companies have in common? Aside from making climbing equipment, they were all founded by men. In fact, it is difficult to find a climbing company that was founded by a woman, though <a href=\"https:\/\/gearjunkie.com\/climbing\/women-owned-climbing-businesses\" rel=\"nofollow\">some examples<\/a> of women-owned businesses do exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Barbieland, Patagonia would have been founded by Malinda Chouinard, not Yvon. The North Face would have been founded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tompkinsconservation.org\/our-team\/\">Kristine McDivitt Tompkins<\/a> (who actually ran Patagonia for a while, as well as, recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/18\/business\/rose-marcario-patagonia-corner-office.html\">Rose Marcario<\/a>), not Doug. The climbing media would center women instead of men.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the money from the gear companies to the media where they advertise, it\u2019s no surprise that said media has a patriarchal bent to it. That\u2019s why we have affinity groups and organizations like <a href=\"http:\/\/nomanslandfilmfestival.org\/about\">No Man\u2019s Land Film Festival<\/a>. What if our biggest film festivals\u2014Banff, Telluride, and 5 Point\u2014featured predominantly women filmmakers and protagonists, and we had affinity spaces for men instead? Imagine a world that necessitated the creation of a Man\u2019s Land Film Festival (er\u2026 maybe don\u2019t imagine that).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climbing writing is just as male-dominated. Consider Summit Magazine, whose founders\u2014Jean Crenshaw and Helen Kilness\u2014hid their identities on the masthead because they were \u201cconcerned that no one would buy the magazine if readers knew it was run by women,\u201d as<a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/on-the-women-who-first-succeeded-in-the-mans-world-of-mountaineering\/\"> Katie Ives points out<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Barbieland, that would not have been necessary. Imagine a world where the top hit for a google search for \u201cgreatest climbing novels ever\u201d wasn\u2019t a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desktodirtbag.com\/best-mountain-climbing-books\/\">top 10 list featuring one (that\u2019s right, one) female author<\/a>. The most celebrated climbs would be ones put up by women.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With women at the helm in the media, we\u2019d be seeing very different climbs (and climbers) getting all the coverage. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/bethrodden.com\/my-story\/\">Beth Rodden<\/a> climbing Meltdown back in 2008 would have been a watershed moment for the sport. At 5.14c, it was one of the hardest pitches of trad in the world at the time, if not <em>the<\/em> hardest. But neither Meltdown nor Rodden got the attention they deserved\u2014probably because most men wrote the climb off as irrelevant since it suited smaller fingers (read, women\u2019s fingers), instead of their own grubby digits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took ten years before a man was finally able to free Meltdown. Ten years. Few climbs of such notoriety and ease of access ever resist a repeat for so long. Another one? The Nose of El Capitan\u2014also first freed by a woman, the indomitable <a href=\"https:\/\/lynnhillclimbing.com\/media\/climbs-travels\/the-nose\/\">Lynn Hill<\/a>\u2014sat unrepeated for 13 years before it was freed again by Rodden (and the Ken she was hanging out with at that time). The strongest climbers in the world would be women.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Lynn Hill claimed the first free ascent of the Nose, she could have been (and should have been) crowned the strongest\/best\/most talented climber in the world. Of course, she wasn\u2019t. By most accounts, that honorific still belonged to Wolfgang Gullich, who had climbed the 5.14d, Action Directe, two years prior. Hill\u2019s masterpiece required 1,000 meters of laser-focused footwork, technique, and body tension. Gullich\u2019s magnum opus was 15 meters long. Even though Action Directe is far shorter, and was repeated a mere four years later (remember: The Nose was not freed again for 13 years), it is still considered the \u201charder\u201d route. Why? Because of what the male-dominated sport of climbing privileges in terms of difficulty (e.g., wild campusing over careful footwork). But judging by the numbers, The Nose is actually the harder climb to repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, nobody in Barbieland would have been surprised if Lynn Hill had been called the strongest climber in the world. She would have been preceded by a proud lineage of other women who had been similarly queened\u2014from the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/27\/world\/asia\/junko-tabei-dead.html\">Junko Tabei<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/in-memory-of-wanda-rutkiewicz-1943-1992\/402961\/p3\">Wanda Rutkiewicz<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/14\/obituaries\/overlooked-alison-hargreaves.html\">Alison Hargreaves<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catherinedestivelle.com\/about\/\">Catherine Destivelle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climbing.com\/people\/first-woman-to-send-5-14b-5-14c-5-14d-and-15a-no-longer-feels-the-need-to-climb\/\">Josune Bereziartu<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortheloveofclimbing.com\/episodes\/episode-43-becoming-katie\">Katie Brown<\/a>. The most famous climbers in the world would be women.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This may go without saying, as it should follow as a natural corollary from the previous point. But of course, it\u2019s still hard to imagine, isn\u2019t it? Go ahead\u2014picture a world where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sheneenagins\/?hl=en\">Nina Williams<\/a> (212K instagram followers) is more famous than Alex Honnold (2.6M instagram followers). Where Rodden is better known than Caldwell. <a href=\"https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/janja-garnbret-best-comp-climber\/\">Garnbret<\/a> over Ondra. <a href=\"https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/ashima-shiraishi-portrait-young-prodigy\/\">Shiraishi<\/a> over Sharma. It\u2019s difficult to envision\u2014but not because women climbers are any less strong, driven, skillful, compelling, interesting, complex, or memorable characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Barbieland, great male climbers would still be recognized and honored for their achievements. But the real top dogs would all be women. And there\u2019d really be nothing surprising about that, since it would tend to take men much longer than women to repeat all the hardest routes in the world\u2014routes that, again, would better suit women climbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Climbing gyms would feel like a much safer place.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flashfoxy.com\/\">Flash Foxy<\/a> conducted a survey exploring how gender affects one\u2019s experience at the climbing gym. \u201cSixty-four percent of women who took the survey said they felt uncomfortable, insulted, or dismissed at some point during their training, as opposed to 29 percent of men.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/culture\/opinion\/how-gender-affects-your-experience-climbing-gym\/\">So writes Shelma Jun<\/a>, founder of Flash Foxy and creator of the Women\u2019s Climbing Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> \u201c65 percent of women said they had experienced microaggressions\u2026 39 percent of women complained of unwanted staring, more than double the percentage reported by men\u2026 In other words, just because most women don\u2019t experience blatant, aggressive sexual harassment at their climbing gyms, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not there in the form of condescension or unwanted flirtation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If Flash Foxy were to conduct the survey again, they might consider polling respondents on receiving unsolicited mansplaining and beta. At least according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/climbergirls\/comments\/b0gq8d\/any_epic_examples_of_mansplaining_while_climbing\/\">this Reddit forum<\/a>. Of course, in Barbieland, the men would be too busy \u201cbeaching\u201d to teach women how to do things they already knew, like how to tie figure-8 knots and hike Ken\u2019s projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. There\u2019d be no body shaming, bullying, or sexist route names.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, nobody in Barbieland would ever dream of naming a route something like \u201cAstride my Indian Queen.\u201d But as Amanda Loudin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelily.com\/climbing-routes-are-riddled-with-racist-and-misogynistic-names-meet-the-people-trying-to-change-it-all\/\">pointed out for The Lily<\/a> (an imprint of The Washington Post), names like that are painfully common in the male-dominated climbing world. Equally implausible would be an asinine debacle where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/culture\/opinion\/what-we-can-learn-climbings-bullying-saga\/\">male pro climber would create and use an anonymous instagram account to publicly body-shame his female counterpart<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, women can be cruel to women, too\u2014at least in our patriarchal civilization. But it\u2019s Barbieland we\u2019re picturing here\u2014a place where women have one another\u2019s backs. Imagine the impact it would have on future generations of climbers not to be constantly inundated with misogynistic route names, social media bullying, and other forms of hate and violence.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-1024x683.webp 1024w,https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-300x200.webp 300w,https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-768x512.webp 768w,https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers.webp 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img src=\"https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-1024x683.jpg\" height=\"512\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/climbinghouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/women_gym_climbers.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" class=\"wp-image-15491 sp-no-webp\" alt=\"barbie climbers in barbieland\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  > <\/picture><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Climbing wouldn\u2019t be rife with eating disorders.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of body shaming, if climbing existed in Barbie\u2019s world, it probably wouldn\u2019t be a magnet for eating disorders. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/carolinelovesphotos\">Caroline Treadway<\/a> so staggeringly portrayed in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=thtDQJGrO5s\">2021 film, Light<\/a>, disordered eating and body dysmorphia are omnipresent at the highest echelons of our sport. While this issue does affect men as well, it is clear from the film that it is a struggle women climbers\u2014like bouldering phenom and photography savant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angiepayne.com\/About\">Angie Payne<\/a>\u2014face disproportionately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Barbieland, a climber would be appreciated and celebrated no matter what their body looked like. Everyone is respected in Barbieland, regardless of their profession, skin color, or weight. What if the climbing world could say the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. The majority of climbers would be women, not men.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With all of the above changes taken into consideration, it would be no surprise to see far more women climbing in Barbieland than men. When Barbies saw climbing, they\u2019d see a sport that placed women front and center, not on the sidelines like so many discarded and unwanted Ken dolls. Unfortunately, that&#8217;s not how it works in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the American Alpine Club (AAC) released a landmark study of climbing in America entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/aac-publications.s3.amazonaws.com\/articles\/State_of_Climbing_Report_2019_Web.pdf\">the State of Climbing report<\/a>. Among the report\u2019s findings were that only 41% of climbers\u2014and a mere 27% of the AAC\u2019s own members\u2014identified as female. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/postscript\/the-revolutionary-writing-of-bell-hooks\">bell hooks<\/a> said, \u201crepresentation is a crucial location of struggle for any exploited and oppressed people asserting subjectivity and decolonization of the mind.\u201d Climbing in the real world has a major representation problem (and it\u2019s not just a gender issue, by the way).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. This article would have been written by a woman.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Am I, as a man, contributing to the problem by writing this article? Shouldn&#8217;t a woman have written it instead? I think interesting arguments can be made either way\u2014but right or wrong, if this was Barbieland, of course this article would have been written by a woman. All the cards would be stacked in Barbie&#8217;s favor. All the advantages, privileges, and systemic forms of discrimination would favor Barbies, not a Ken like me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, Barbie provides a compelling perspective through which we can see misogyny and patriarchy at work. And racism, classism, ableism and other forms of oppression, as the film attempts to address. Because none of these forms of discrimination or oppression exists in a vacuum, and intersectionality is just as (or even more) important in the climbing world as it is in Barbieland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The devastating effects of patriarchy, and toxic masculinity, are there in plain sight anywhere you look\u2014whether you turn your gaze toward the climbing world, Hollywood, or politics in the United States of America. All you have to do to see them is imagine the world we know, but Barbie-ified. Flip the script. Turn the tables. Who would have thought that a doll made for little girls could provide such a powerful tool for dismantling one of the world\u2019s oldest systems of oppression? Maybe climbing\u2014a sport, if not a toy\u2014can be an equally potent way to achieve the same goal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What if Barbie ruled over climbing?
